Grabyo Spotlight London 2023: The wrap-up
We were delighted to bring Grabyo Spotlight back to London this year, bigger and more ambitious than ever.
We decided to build our own end-to-end live production, in our hired venue, in under half a day. We wanted to showcase the flexibility and power of cloud video production while giving our attendees the chance to be involved.
Our delegates were also treated to some insightful and engaging panels featuring speakers from the likes of TikTok, The FA, Meta, SailGP, PDC, Greenfly and Aurora Media.

The live production
Our live production studio was affectionately dubbed “CloudTruck”, highlighting our ambition to deliver all the functionality of a mobile OB truck in a cloud environment.
Our production covered a live on-site darts tournament played by all of our delegates and speakers. We used multiple high-grade cameras and smartphones for capture, producing the show entirely in the cloud using Grabyo Producer.

The insights
After our live production had finished, we sat down to hear from some of the leading minds in the broadcast and media industry. Our Spotlight London events are strictly closed-door, but here are some of the key takeaways.
Social media: A channel of its own
During our panels, a repeated topic was the role of live video on social media. As video channels, social platforms have evolved to become a vital component of any content strategy.
Many are discovering that social video content should not be viewed as a competitor to broadcast or OTT. While varying from platform to platform, the expectations of audiences on these platforms do not include high production value.
The demand for raw, authentic content is high. Short-form video is the most widely consumed format. Speed and context trump production or video quality every time.
Rights holders and broadcasters should view social content as a specific channel, with its own needs. Its purpose is to add further dimensions to live events for audiences, through enhanced access. It does not need to replicate what they can watch on TV.
We’re also just beginning to see the impact of collaborating with individual content creators, leveraging not just their following, but their understanding of audience engagement on social media.
New ways of working to become the ways of working
Lessons from the COVID pandemic are now becoming part of everyday life for production teams. Many are just starting their transition to cloud working, but all agree it is the solution for more redundant and reliable video workflows.
We are working hard to deliver the tools media organizations need to make this happen. Our recently released instant replay feature, and upcoming enhancements across Grabyo Producer, will place our live production platform at the forefront of live production in the cloud.
There is also a marked transition in how production teams acquire and access their tools. The broadcast industry is still playing catch up in this regard to the rest of the technology world.
Software and solutions delivered as SaaS platforms dominate the business landscape. The nature of SaaS platforms, functionality built into fully managed turn-key solutions, can revolutionize how media organizations manage their workloads.
In times of stress on budgets and resources, SaaS platforms such as Grabyo enable businesses to streamline their operating costs and scale their operations up or down to align with business needs.
