Grabyo’s 2019 in review

It’s been a fantastic year for #TeamGrabyo across the globe.

2019 has been a busy year at Grabyo. We’ve expanded our presence across the world, welcomed a host of new partners into our world of cloud-native video production, and released many exciting new features for real-time video editing.

Before we get into all that, let’s start with some numbers.

We’ve worked very closely with our partners to ensure they can deliver the very best real-time and live content across all digital and mobile platforms. Digital video consumption has reached a tipping point, and the value of capturing audiences on these channels is at an all-time high.

Our 2019 research reports (we’ll discuss these later) found that consumers aged under 35 prefer watching on digital platforms to TV, while smartphones are used to watch video most often by all consumers.

The future of the TV is the internet, and we’re accelerating towards it.

With a little help from our friends

We’re delighted to have formed many new partnerships with premier broadcasters, rights holders and publishers this year.

The strength of our platform is based on a foundation of two-way communication between us and our partners. We want to do more than provide our leading platform of video production tools, we want to add value to the digital workflow, and raise the bar of what is possible in the cloud.

This year, we were part of many exciting projects and events across the world, but here are a few of our highlights:

In January, Tennis Australia utilized our platform to deliver real-time clips and live streams from the Australian Open, bringing the excitement of the tournament to fans all over the world.

In March, we partnered with the disruptive football and eSports outfit Hashtag United. The club, founded on YouTube, uses our tools to live stream its commentary team during the club’s football matches and produces real-time clips. The club also uses our platform to deliver eSports content with its FIFA 20 players, featuring FUT ‘pack openings’ and gameplay.

Ahead of the 71st Emmy® Awards in September, the Television Academy, in partnership with Little Dot Studios, used our platform to clip and edit major moments from the awards show in real-time, bringing digital audiences closer to the awards show than ever before.

Last but by no means least, our long-term partnership with the AELTC, which has successfully blended innovation with tradition for many years, went a step further in July.

Using Grabyo Producer, our cloud-based live production platform, the AELTC and Livewire Sports produced a daily, social-first show every day during the 2019 Championships.

Wimbledon Coffee Morning’s debut series reached over 1 million views across Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. It provided a new perspective on the tournament and added a live, interactive experience for tennis fans on social media.

We also struck some exciting new partnerships across the APAC region with the likes of Media Prima BerhadTrans7janda Productions and more. We are proud of the work we are doing to help content publishers in the region innovate their digital publishing capabilities, and enhance the experience for consumers across Asia and beyond.

Skating to where the puck will be

We’re never content with standing still for any amount of time. We’re always thinking about where the industry is heading and how we can provide our partners with the tools they need to succeed.

As Wayne Gretzky puts it: “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been.”

In 2019 we’ve introduced many new features to the Grabyo platform which enhances the way our partners can deliver digital video. The beauty of being a cloud-native platform is that once these features are launched, all of our partners have access immediately, the next time they log in to Grabyo.

Firstly, our advanced, browser-based editing tool, Grabyo Editor, has had an AI upgrade. Using automated speech recognition (ASR), Editor is able to produce fully automated closed captions on a video, which can be easily fine-tuned. This helps our partners go to market with content even faster, while optimizing video for viewing silently.

We’ve also added some major new features to Grabyo Producer. Our partners can now invite external guests to participate in live broadcasts, for remote commentary or guest appearances. These guests can use local sources, such as a laptop camera and microphone, to contribute their video and audio. All of this can be done using only a web browser and an internet connection.

Additionally, broadcasters can now replace advertisements on linear broadcasts pushed into the Grabyo platform. Producer is now able to detect ‘ad markers’ such as onCue for RTMP or SCTE-35 for MPEG-TS streams. This allows users to remove in-stream advertisements from a live broadcast and replace with VOD content to create additional sponsor revenue or adhere to social platforms’ Advertising Policies.

Any other business

With an established presence across EMEA, North America and APAC, in March this year we expanded the reach of Team Grabyo further into Latin America.

Situated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, our LatAM team are working closely with our existing clients in the region as well as offering guidance and insight for broadcasters and publishers in the region looking to expand their digital content.

And that’s a wrap! Thanks to all of our partners and friends of Grabyo who have made 2019 a year to remember. If you want to learn more about anything we’ve done this year, feel free to drop us a line at hello@grabyo.com.
